Bring-Your-Own-Tablet - Year 7 and Year 8

Over the last 5 years Guilsborough Academy have been developing the integration of technology in to our students’ learning through Netbook and Tablet schemes. An overwhelming majority of students have participated in these schemes in previous years, allowing students to access the school’s Virtual Learning Environment, resources and software both in school and at home.

Changes in technologies mean we now focus on developing a ‘Bring-Your-Own-Tablet’ scheme, encouraging all new Year 7 students to bring their own Tablets in to school.

A copy of letters sent to parents regarding this scheme and the presentation given at the information sessions can be found in the Documents area [link here].

Recommended Device

We have offered advice to parents and carers on devices that will most effectively work with our IT systems through a Bring-Your-Own-Tablet scheme. Suitable Tablets will run Windows 10, or Windows 8 or Windowss 7, run a recent version of iOS on Apple iPads or run a recent version of Android (within the last 4 versions of Android).
Our preferred device fulfils the following;

  • Operating system -Windows 8 or Windows 10
  • Memory (RAM) - 2 GB
  • Storage (Hard drive) –32Gb SSD/64Gb SSD
  • Battery life – 6 hours
  • Do not need Microsoft Office or Office 365
  • Price ~ £200
  • Keyboard
  • Rugged case
  • Screen size –8 inches –10 inches

This is our preferred device, however we  are able to, and do, support almost all wireless enabled devices.

Set Up and Start Date

Students will not need to bring devices in to school until the third or fourth week of term. Prior to this date parents will be required to sign a Bring-Your-Own-Tablet agreement indicating that they agree to terms and conditions under which their child may bring a Tablet in to school. This will include acknowledging that the school will not be liable for damage or loss with respect to any mobile device.
We will provide access to our network and the internet, configuring students’ own devices to access our network and use our software on their own devices. We will assist students to download Microsoft Office on to their Tablets, iPads and Android devices. Students are able to install Microsoft Office on up to 5 device through the school’s Microsoft Advantage scheme.

Insurance and Warranty

The school will not be liable for damage or loss with respect to a mobile device.  A student's personal device will not be covered by school insurance. We suggest that parents explore a 3 year extended warranty for any device being purchased and look to purchase separate insurance to cover accidental damage and/or loss.  Additionally a protective case should be use to transport the device to school and if possible encase the device during use to reduce the likelihood of accidental damage.

Support

The school receives funding from the Department for Education to support students on Free School Meals and we will use this funding to purchase a Windows Tablet that has a 3 year warranty and 3 years of insurance for students who fulfil this criteria. Additionally the school will review any parental request for support in providing their child with a Tablet. A copy of the letter provided to parents can be access in the Documents area [link here].
