Empowering Students Through Mental Health Awareness

On Thursday 20th March, five students, accompanied by Mr Woolridge, Assistant Principal and Senior Mental Health Lead, and Miss Rowinski, our school counsellor, attended the third annual For Students By Students Conference at St Benedict’s Church, Northampton. This inspiring event, organised by the newly appointed Lead Global Ambassador Students at Quinton House School, focused on the critical topic of mental health.

The day featured a range of informative and engaging sessions led by experts in the field, including a welcome address from Mike Reader MP and talks from Mrs Strawson (local psychologist) and Dr Mike Scanlon (local psychiatrist) on understanding the brain and mental health challenges. Students also heard real-life stories from The Lowdown and Action for Happiness Northampton, and took part in practical workshops led by The Frank Bruno Foundation, Sport in Mind, and Action for Happiness. A special highlight was the introduction by Chantelle Cameron, former undisputed Light-Welterweight Boxing World Champion, who shared her personal journey of overcoming mental health challenges.

The day closed with remarks from the Lord Lieutenant of Northampton, reinforcing the importance of ongoing mental health awareness and support within schools and the wider community.

Our students left the conference feeling inspired and equipped with practical strategies to support mental health at Guilsborough. We are already exploring ways to implement the insights gained today to further strengthen the support we offer for our students’ wellbeing.

A big thank you to Quinton House School and the event sponsors for providing such a valuable opportunity. This conference was not just about listening - it was about learning how to take action and make a positive difference.
