Spotlight on Matilda
This week, Guilsborough Academy students have wowed audiences with their outstanding production of Matilda the Musical.
The much-loved adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story came alive on stage, showcasing the immense talent and dedication of the school’s students and staff. The cast and crew even received a shoutout on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2!
Listen to the shoutout on BBC Sounds here (timed at 1.16.00).
From the opening notes of the energetic “Miracle” to the empowering finale, the production captivated audiences with its humour, heart, and charm. The cast of students brought their A-game, with every performer fully embodying their character.
Particular praise must go to Florence, who portrayed Matilda, whose mix of confidence, wit, and vulnerability anchored the show. Equally impressive were the performances of Miss Trunchbull and Miss Honey. Tom, playing Miss Trunchbull, delivered a masterclass in comedy and physicality, balancing menace with hilarity, while Miss Honey brought warmth, compassion, and quiet strength to the stage. Faye's heartfelt performance of “This Little Girl” was a standout moment that left many in the audience deeply moved.
Whilst we highlight these key performances, it’s important to acknowledge that the smaller parts were equally phenomenal. From the quirky classmates, to the spirited family of Matilda, EVERY member of the cast brought their unique energy and flair to the production. A show of this calibre simply cannot come together without the commitment and talent of the entire team, both on stage and behind the scenes.
The ensemble was vibrant and full of energy, particularly in numbers like "School Song” and “Revolting Children”, where the choreography, set design, props and lighting brought an electrifying sense of movement and mischief.
This production was a testament to Guilsborough Academy’s commitment to the performing arts and the hard work of the entire school community. Months of rehearsals, set-building, and costume-making clearly paid off, resulting in a show that rivals professional productions in its polish and heart.
Congratulations to the students, staff, and all involved for delivering a performance that was, in a word, magical. Audiences left the theatre inspired, and reminded that, as Matilda herself says, “Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.”
If you missed this spectacular production, make sure to catch the next one – this has set the bar high for future shows!
