Students Explore My Fair Lady at Curve Theatre, Leicester
This week, GCSE and A-Level students had the privilege of attending a Theatre Day Workshop and watching a matinee performance of My Fair Lady. This enriching experience provided them with unique insights into the world of theatre and offered an engaging blend of educational and practical activities.
Running Saturday 23 November 2024 to Saturday 4 January 2025, the production will be directed by Curve’s Artistic Director Nikolai Foster, whose recent acclaimed productions include Evita, A Chorus Line and – winner of the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Regional Production and UK Theatre Award for Best Musical Production – Billy Elliot.
A musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady was first performed on Broadway in 1956 starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews, followed by an Oscar-winning 1964 film adaptation starring Harrison and Audrey Hepburn.
The Theatre Day Workshop offered an array of sessions, starting with an enlightening talk from the Assistant Director. Students gained valuable knowledge about the various aspects of a theatrical production and the intricate details that contribute to a successful performance. The day continued with a dynamic dance and voice workshop, where students had the opportunity to learn and practice essential skills crucial for any aspiring performer. Following this, they attended a talk on set design and props, which unveiled the magic behind creating captivating stage environments and the meticulous attention to detail required.
One of the most exciting parts of the workshop was a session where students got the chance to direct the lead actors in a scene from the play. This hands-on experience allowed them to step into the shoes of a director and understand the creative and collaborative process involved in bringing a scene to life.
The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to ask questions and delve deeper into the topics discussed throughout the day. This interactive element provided a platform for students to clarify their doubts and further their understanding of theatre production. The students’ enthusiasm and excellent behaviour were commendable throughout the day. Between the workshop and the show, they also participated in a Christmas Quiz organised by MrS Phipp, adding a festive touch to the day’s activities and fostering a sense of camaraderie among the students.
We would like to extend our thanks to Mrs Wilson, Miss Bagnall-Scott, and Mrs Phipp for their support in organising and running this trip. The Theatre Day Workshop not only provided our students with a deeper appreciation for the art of theatre but also inspired many to consider future involvement in the performing arts. We look forward to running more enriching experiences in the future.
