In term 1 Students will be completing their Controlled assessment NEA 1. This is a scientific investigation into the properties of specific ingredients.
They will select an area of study from examboard briefs. They are expected to research and form a hypothesis which they then design experiments to test. Students are expected to collect results analyse the outcomes and write a conclusion based on the evidence they have collected. There will be 10 formal hours to complete the work under controlled conditions. The teacher will publish dates when practical experiments will be carried out, if a student misses these lessons they will need to attend an afterschool session to get the work completed. One lesson in five, students will be working on consolidating their theory knowledge in preparation for their Y11 exams. There will be a biweekly homework assignment. |
Students will receive feedback www and ebi on each section of work. They will be told the band of the mark scheme that their work currently reflects.

Students are working on their Sustained Project (coursework) that is worth 60% of their overall GCSE. The theme they are focussing on is “Animals & Insects”. Students will spend Term 1& 2 looking Animals specifically, creating observational drawings, experimenting with pattern and shape using a variety of mixed media. They will look at Ernst Haeckel, Lucy Arnold, Sophie Standing, Karen Nicol, Janine Haschl, Yumi Okita, Adam Pritchett, Rachel Grigg analysing their work and creating studies & samples in the style of their work. Students will be actively encouraged to look at other artists & designers to add to their portfolio. Students will also build up their printing and dyeing skills, looking at ways of using natural materials to dye fabrics. They will be required to create regular personal outcomes of their animals and insects’ studies throughout the project. . |
Students are frequently assessed & monitored against the Assessment Objectives, having feedback in their Student Booklet to inform them of their progress, quality and quantity of work.

Term 1 & 2 - Macbeth Students study a play by Shakespeare, focussing on key themes of power, ambition and leadership. Key skills: comprehension of Shakespearean English; understanding context of Renaissance England; exploring patterns and themes across the play; structuring and writing essays with a clear personal viewpoint. + Unseen Poetry Alongside studying Macbeth, students also have weekly lessons in reading “unseen” poetry, building confidence in independently understanding and analysing poems they have never been taught before. This skill is needed for Paper 2 of the English Literature GCSE. |

All students will be set THREE Educake homeworks per fortnight (www.educake.co.uk) , one for each subject. These are always set on a Monday of week one and will be due in on the Sunday of week 2 (or the last Sunday of a holiday if it is set on the last fortnight of term)
Every topic will have a number of assessment points (roughly 1 every 6 lessons). These are based on exam questions and are designed to help build students exam skills as well as test their recall on the topics.
