In Term 3, Year 11 Computer Science will concentrate on Programming Fundamentals, following the OCR J277 Computer Science specification. This module is designed to consolidate and advance students' programming skills in preparation for their GCSE examinations. Students will delve into key programming concepts such as variables, constants, operators, inputs and outputs, and assignments. They will deepen their understanding of the three fundamental programming constructs: sequence, selection, and iteration (including both count-controlled and condition-controlled loops). The module will also cover basic string manipulation, file handling operations (like opening, reading, writing, and closing files), and the use of data structures such as one-dimensional and two-dimensional arrays. Additionally, students will learn how to implement subprograms (functions and procedures) to create structured and efficient code, and will revisit data types and casting. This comprehensive module aims to enhance problem-solving abilities and prepare students for the practical aspects of their GCSE assessments. |
Assessment will include short quizzes during lessons to reinforce learning and provide immediate feedback on understanding. At the end of the module, students will complete a thorough assessment featuring OCR J277 exam-style programming tasks and theoretical questions. This assessment is designed to evaluate their proficiency in applying programming concepts to solve problems and to ensure they are well-prepared for the programming components of the GCSE Computer Science examination. |

In Term 4, Year 11 Computing will focus on Revision for the OCR J277 Computer Science Exam. This term is dedicated to reinforcing and consolidating the knowledge and skills students have developed throughout the course in preparation for their final assessments. Revision will cover all key topics, including Systems Architecture, Memory and Storage, Networks and Protocols, Network Security, Software Development, Algorithms, Programming Fundamentals, and Data Representation. Lessons will include a mix of theory recaps, practical programming tasks, and exam-style questions to ensure a thorough understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applications. |
Assessment will be ongoing, with regular quizzes, timed practice exams, and structured feedback to help students identify areas for improvement and build confidence. Students will also engage in targeted revision sessions focusing on common areas of difficulty and examination techniques, including how to approach extended response questions effectively. This term is designed to ensure that students are fully prepared to achieve their potential in the OCR J277 Computer Science exam. |

Students will be moving onto the preparation for their 10-hour exam that will take place towards the start of Term 5. This is Component 2: Externally Set Assignment. Students respond to their chosen starting point from an externally set assignment paper relating to their subject title, evidencing coverage of all four assessment objectives. From AQA: AQA will provide a separate externally set assignment for each title, each with seven different starting points. Students must select and respond to one starting point from their chosen title. The externally set assignment provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate, through an extended creative response, their ability to draw together different areas of knowledge, skills and/or understanding in response to their selected starting point. The extended creative response must explicitly evidence students’ ability to draw together different areas of knowledge, skill and/or understanding from initial engagement with their selected starting point through to their realisation of intentions in the 10 hours of supervised time. Students must ensure that the total submission for Component 2 evidence coverage of all four assessment objectives and evidence of drawing activity and written annotation. Students must identify and acknowledge sources which are not their own. |
Students will receive feedback through WWW/EBI on each section of work. They will be told the band of mark scheme that their work currently reflects. Please note that teachers are prohibited from allocating a grade for coursework / external exam piece to students when the work is in progress.
